Set against the backdrop of the rugged Cambrian Mountains and facing the shimmering Cardigan Bay, the 4-star Trefeddian Hotel in Aberdovey (Aberdyfi in Welsh) is an independent hotel that has been run by the same family for over 100 years. It offers the perfect retreat for anyone seeking comfort and tranquillity amidst the scenic beauty of Wales‘ west coast.
The welcome
We arrived at the Trefeddian Hotel after a scenic drive through the Welsh countryside and parked up in the property’s car park. From there, it was just a short amble to reception, following a charming walkway lined with vibrant blue and pink hydrangeas. We were warmly welcomed at reception, asked if we would like a newspaper delivered to our room in the morning, and advised us on where to find our room, and where we could collect towels for use at the hotel’s pool.
The room
We stayed in room 217, a spacious family room bathed in soft, natural light, that was perfectly suited for our needs. A plush king-size bed took centre stage in the room whilst a couple of cosy armchairs, upholstered in a deep teal blue, beckoned us to curl up with a good book or to simply unwind. A comfortable sofa and accompanying coffee table ensures ample seating for the whole family.
The décor was traditional but elegant, giving off a homely vibe, with neutral tones. Looking back, you will notice there is also a large wardrobe to house guests’ belongings, as well as a dressing table / desk area.
Behind the partition, and close to the entrance to the room, are twin beds. This is a very practical and well-thought out configuration, meaning that Mum and Dad can still stay up and have some separate ‘me time’, once the kids are safely tucked up in bed.
The room also has its own balcony, offering views of the hotel grounds and the stunning coastline beyond.
The bathroom
The en suite bathroom features separate areas for the WC, basin, bath, and shower, whilst the heated towel rail ensured that our towels were always warm and fluffy.
Complimentary toiletries from the English Fine Fragrances Sea Spray collection were provided, including shower gel, shampoo, soap and body lotion, along with a vanity kit and shower caps.

The facilities
There is no need to book a time for dinner. You can have a drink at the bar or in one of the lounges before eating, or head straight for the hotel’s elegant dining room any time between 6.50pm and 8.45pm and there will be a table already prepared for you.
We were served a five-course dinner, with a few options to choose from for each course. Pictured below are the vegetable spring roll with sweet chilli sauce, the baked tranche of haddock fillet persillade on spiced giant cous cous, and the trio of chocolate and pecan slice with a praline ice cream.
Beyond the dining experience, the hotel has many other excellent facilities. Perhaps most notable of all is the indoor heated swimming pool, just about long enough for a workout but perhaps more suited to a leisurely swim. There’s also a whirlpool with seating for four.
Nearby there’s a well-equipped games room, featuring table tennis, pool, and there are board games for families to enjoy, as well as a playroom for really little ones.
There’s also a putting green at the hotel and Aberdovey Golf Club – a links golf course with challenging, undulating greens and fairways – within walking distance.
The location
The Trefeddian Hotel is perched on a hill within the Snowdonia National Park, just a short walk from Aberdovey’s sandy beach, which stretches for miles. It’s an ideal setting for a morning jog or a relaxing sunset walk. The town of Aberdovey – where the River Dovey meets Cardigan Bay – is quite charming, with quaint shops, cafés and a picturesque harbour. Little ones will enjoy crabbing from the jetty, building sandcastles and paddling. Beneath the jetty is a Time and Tide Bell which rings as the tide comes in. This commemorates the legend of Cantre’r Gwaelod, a submerged kingdom beneath the bay which is subject to a popular Welsh folk song, telling of a ringing beneath the water.
Tywyn (home to the Tywyn Railway which has been running since 1865), the busy market town of Machynlleth and Dolgoch Falls are within 10 miles, with Aberystywth and Dolgellau both a little further afield. Maps are available at the hotel with walks, drives and days out in and around the area.
Other nice touches
Several thoughtful touches had been implemented so guests could enjoy their stay at the Trefeddian Hotel. Our room was well-stocked with complimentary tea, coffee and biscuits, making it easy to enjoy a brew without having to leave our room, while in the communal areas there was a chess set, as well as a jigsaw puzzle that was already in progress, offering guests a pleasant way to pass the time. The outdoor putting green was another inviting draw.
Other additional services, such as the option to have a packed lunch prepared for the next day, were also thoughtful. And, for us, the fact that the hotel is very dog friendly was a huge bonus too.
The cost
Rates typically start from around £500 for a two night stay for two people, including dinner, bed and breakfast. From time to time, the hotel also runs offers, such as a recently advertised Autumn special starting from £690 for a 5-night break valid on stays between 29th September and 3rd November, so it is worth being on their mailing list. A 5% discount is also offered to all staying guests who book for the next year.
The best bit
The best part of staying at the Trefeddian Hotel was undoubtedly the view. Whether sitting in the lounge with a cup of coffee or enjoying a meal in the restaurant, the vistas of the beach, rolling hills and endless sky were always there. We were fortunate enough to be able to enjoy a drink on the terrace before dinner just as the sun was setting, and this was quite magical.
The final verdict
We enjoyed our stay at theTrefeddian Hotel – it was very relaxing and served as an ideal base for us since we were attending an event in Aberdovey. While the hotel’s timeless appeal seems to particularly resonate with older guests, many of whom visit year after year, there are plenty of facilities to appeal to families also. Whatever the age of your party, you will be assured a peaceful retreat for touring the Welsh coast and countryside should you choose to explore.
